Modern Gun Reviews: The Best and Worst of the Latest Shooting Gear

Kentucky's deer hunting began with the start of archery season on Sept. 4. Bowhunters can hunt through Jan. 17, 2022. Kentucky also offers crossbow, muzzleloader and youth seasons, in addition to modern gun and archery seasons.

Many of our Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) allow hunting with archery equipment at any point throughout the season," Sams said. Most modern gun opportunities on WMAs are rifle quota hunts held during the first weekend in November, but I would encourage hunters to consult the Public Hunting Areas Quick Reference in the fall hunting and trapping guide for areas where hunting with modern firearms is allowed during the regular gun season."

The modern gun deer season opens in less than two weeks and is timed to start with the peak of breeding activity, known as the rut.The 2022-23 deer season is off to a strong start. Archery and crossbow hunters posted the second-highest harvest total on record for September, and October's numbers were up over last year.

Historically, most deer hunters are in the woods during the modern gun season, which this year opens Nov. 12 and continues through Nov. 27. Noelle Thompson, deer program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, points out that the modern gun season alone accounted for 73 percent of the total statewide deer harvest of more than 132,000 deer last year.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will operate 13 mandatory CWD Check Station locations in the CWD Surveillance Zone during the modern gun weekends of Nov. 12-14, Nov. 19-21 and Nov. 26-27. All deer harvested in those five counties during the listed dates must be taken to a check station.

Conclusion: Redlined neighborhoods within Louisville, KY in 1937 had significantly more GSVs today. The impact of historical and institutional racism on modern gun violence merits acknowledgement and further study.

In the second half of the 18th century, musket design branched out. This period produced a number of single-purpose firearms. The forerunner of modern shotguns was the fowling piece, developed specifically for hunting birds. Among the upper classes, fowling was a leisure sport. Fowling pieces for the very affluent were often lovely works of art, but impractical for hunting.

Although Arkansas is famous for its world-class duck hunting, it is also one of the top deer-hunting states in the South in terms of both numbers of deer taken and quality of bucks, or male deer. The opening weekend of the modern gun deer season is also the state's biggest event in terms of participation.

"Behind Christmas and the opening of Arkansas Razorbacks football season, opening day of the modern gun deer season has got to rank in the top 3, 4 or 5," said Ralph Meeker, deer program coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. "We estimate that we have a little over 300,000 deer hunters in Arkansas. Compare that to Arkansas' total [population], that's one out of every 7, 8 or 9 people that deer hunt. That's pretty good."

Modern gun deer season is also when hunters kill the biggest percentage of deer. For several years, hunters have killed more than 200,000 deer annually. Meeker said that hunters kill about 30,000-35,000 during the first two days of the modern gun season. Current trends indicate that hunters are on pace to kill a comparable number of deer, he added.

Deer hunters are required to wear a fluorescent cap and vest or jacket during the modern gun season. They also must possess a hunting license and proper tags and should carry an ink pen and a rubber band, length of wire or zip tie so they can fill out their tag and attach it to their deer before transporting it. Youth hunters must have their own customer identification number to check deer. Customer ID numbers are available at

If you don't want to use a modern weapon, you can still hunt with a bow or muzzleloader. If you want to earn a Triple Trophy Award this year, the Private Lands Antlerless Hunt can give you an extra five days to try to bag a deer with a muzzleloader. Time isn't an issue for bowhunters because their season runs through Feb. 28.

You can, of course, kill a buck with a bow or crossbow during the private lands modern gun antlerless only season. Document an arrow kill as thoroughly as you can. Photos are good. Video is better. Don't clean the crossbow bolt or arrow.

This year, a few members of the Old Belfast Hunting Club are taking a different twist on the private land antlerless only modern gun hunt. We are hunting exclusively with 20-gauge shotguns. This is Mike Romine's idea, because he's got a really cool Savage 20-gauge slug gun.

The upcoming modern gun deer season did not look rosy a month ago, as a debilitating drought gripped Kentucky. The month of September was the driest month on record in the state, with an average total rainfall of less than a quarter inch.

The first firearms originated in 10th-century China, when bamboo tubes containing gunpowder and pellet projectiles were mounted on spears to make the portable fire lance,[4] operable by a single person, which was later used effectively as a shock weapon in the siege of De'an in 1132. In the 13th century, fire lance barrels were replaced with metal tubes and transformed into the metal-barreled hand cannon.[5] The technology gradually spread throughout Eurasia during the 14th century. Older firearms typically used black powder as a propellant, but modern firearms use smokeless powder or other propellants. Most modern firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stability.

Most modern long guns are either rifles or shotguns. Both are the successors of the musket, diverging from their parent weapon in distinct ways. A rifle is so named for the spiral grooves (riflings) machined into the inner (bore) surface of its barrel, which imparts a gyroscopically-stabilizing spin to the bullets that it fires. Shotguns are predominantly smoothbore firearms designed to fire a number of shot in each discharge; pellet sizes commonly ranging between 2 mm #9 birdshot and 8.4 mm #00 (double-aught) buckshot. Shotguns are also capable of firing single solid projectiles called slugs, or specialty (often "less lethal") rounds such as bean bags, tear gas or breaching rounds. Rifles produce a single point of impact with each firing but a long range and high accuracy; while shotguns produce a cluster of impact points with considerably less range and accuracy. However, the larger impact area of shotguns can compensate for reduced accuracy, since shot spreads during flight; consequently, in hunting, shotguns are generally used for fast-flying game birds.

A machine gun is a fully automatic firearm, most often separated from other classes of automatic weapons by the use of belt-fed ammunition (though some designs employ drum, pan or hopper magazines), generally in a rifle-inspired caliber ranging between 5.5645mm NATO (.223 Remington) to .50 BMG or even larger. Although not widely fielded until World War I, early machine guns were being used by militaries in the second half of the 19th century. Notables in the U.S. arsenal during the 20th century included the M2 Browning .50 caliber heavy machine gun, M1919 Browning .30 caliber medium machine gun, and the M60 7.6251mm NATO general-purpose machine gun which came into use around the Vietnam War. Machine guns of this type were originally defensive firearms crewed by at least two men, mainly because of the difficulties involved in moving and placing them, their ammunition, and their tripod. In contrast, modern light machine guns such as the FN Minimi are often wielded by a single soldier. They provide a large ammunition capacity and a high rate of fire and are typically used to give suppressing fire during infantry movement. The accuracy of machine guns varies based on a wide number of factors from design to manufacturing tolerances, most of which have been improved over time. Machine guns are often mounted on vehicles or helicopters and have been used since World War I as offensive firearms in fighter aircraft and tanks (e.g. for air combat or suppressing fire for ground troop support).

Battle rifles are another subtype of rifle, usually defined as selective fire rifles that fire full power rifle cartridges, examples of which include the 7.62x51mm NATO, 7.92x57mm Mauser, and 7.62x54mmR. The term originated as a retronym to differentiate older full-powered rifles of these configurations (e.g. M1 Garand) from newer rifles chambered in intermediate cartridge (e.g. Steyr AUG), but it is sometimes used today to describe similar rifles introduced in the modern day, such as the FN SCAR.

An automatic firearm, or "fully automatic", "fully auto", or "full auto", is generally defined as one that continues to load and fire cartridges from its magazine as long as the trigger is depressed (and until the magazine is depleted of available ammunition.) The first weapon generally considered in this category is the Gatling gun, originally a carriage-mounted, crank-operated firearm with multiple rotating barrels that was fielded in the American Civil War. The modern trigger-actuated machine gun began with various designs developed in the late 19th century and fielded in World War I, such as the Maxim gun, Lewis gun, and MG 08 "Spandau". Most automatic weapons are classed as long guns (as the ammunition used is of a similar type as for rifles, and the recoil of the weapon's rapid fire is better controlled with two hands), but handgun-sized automatic weapons also exist, generally in the "submachine gun" or "machine pistol" class.

An early depiction of a firearm is a sculpture from a cave in Sichuan, China. The sculpture dates to the 12th century[21] and represents a figure carrying a vase-shaped bombard, with flames and a cannonball coming out of it.[22] The oldest surviving gun, a hand cannon made of bronze, has been dated to 1288 because it was discovered at a site in modern-day Acheng District, Heilongjiang, China, where the Yuan Shi records that battles were fought at that time.[23] The firearm had a 17.5 cm (6.9 in) barrel of a 2.5 cm (1 in) diameter, a 6.6 cm (2.6 in) chamber for the gunpowder and a socket for the firearm's handle. It is 34 centimetres (13 in) long and 3.54 kilograms (7.8 lb) without the handle, which would have been made of wood.[24]
